Cynthia McKinney, Bob Barr, Ralph Nader, Chuck Baldwin. What do these people have in common with Barack Obama and John McCain? They are all running for president of the United States of America.
We received a sample ballot in the mail this week end. I was surprised to see that there were actually six candidates on the ballot plus a write in option. If you are still one of the undecided voters it seems that there are more options than I realized.
Our ballot also has two proposals to amend the state constitution. The first question is whether or not to allow early voting in Maryland. This is obviously already being done in other states. It seems like a good idea to me. Do you have any opposition to early voting? My neighbor says it increases the probability of voter fraud. What's your opinion?
The second question is whether or not to allow state sponsored slot machines. This idea is being pushed by the horse racing industry as a good way to increase funds for public schools. I'm not sure what I think about this one. It seems like lower income folks would be the ones who spend the most here and I'm not too comfortable with the whole idea. I know a lot of people love to play the slots. Bus loads of senior citizens travel to neighboring states to spend a day with the slot machines. What do you think? Are slot machines a good way for the state to raise money for the schools? Or is this just a way to enrich the racing and gaming industry?

I'll always vote against casinos. Atlantic City almost makes me sick when I go down there. It's so depressing to see.
I'm voting NO on the telephone tax.
Early voting is a good idea, I think it would make the polling place less crowded the day of.
We, too, got the sample ballot. It was good to be able to review the questions and referenda in advance.
I have the same uneasiness as your neighbor about early voting. It just feels like an invitation to fraud and error.
I am planning to vote against both slots and the phone tax. $20 of my $130 monthly cellphone bill is already taxes... enough! I also think that lower-income folks (including senior citizens) will suffer disproportionately.
But if I want to vote for all the spending on fire departments, libraries, and county buildings, then I suppose I should vote for the tax. But perhaps income would be better. Your right about the disproportionate burden.
The casinos aren't scheduled for my county. I'm against them in general, but why not get a piece of what their driving up to Atlantic City?
those spending questions are to allow the county to issue bonds for those expenses. so it's not a tax issue.
Texas has early voting. We love it (and have already voted) as it lets us find the convenient time to go vote - and not to try and work around a work schedule on a Tuesday which often requires very long waits, etc. I have no concerns regarding fraud or voting error being introduced because of early voting. I don't think there were that many options for President/Vice-President on the Texas ballots...
Texas voted-in pari-mutual horse betting some years ago. It still is available, but for whatever reason, never has gotten "big" here in Texas. Next came various state sponsored lottery games. They have been more "successful" - though all proceeds go into a "general" fund which to me affords our wonderful state politicians a nice big bucket of free money to spend however they choose. It would have been better in my mind to restrict those proceeds to something in particular - like public education or whatever.
Hope all are well.

No sample ballot as of yet....but we are Democrats and this Republican state may not send us one and leave us guessing as to our polling place....seriously. we have Indian gambling here.....and sadly the reservations are like third world neighborhoods.....we don't get to vote on it I don't think.
We vote my mail here in Washington so yes I have voted already. I voted FOR assisted suicide on our ballots. I really believe we have a right to die painlessly when we have 6 months or less to live and will die a horrible death. Oregon is the only other state at this time to have this option.
I also vote NO on anything that creates new taxes. I figure if the government screws up the management of the exorbitant amount of tax money they already have, then why give them more to miss use. Government employess get paid way too much to begin with. I better shut up before I really get blasted from you bloggers out there. GO OBAMA!!!!!
I'm for early voting. We have it in some parts of California, but not in my county.
I don't have anything against gaming,or casinos.Back when they legalized that sort of thing in Cali, they promised tons of money for our schhols, and yet the schools are suffering terribly from lack of funding..I don't get it.
